The first antenatal appointment is longer than the ones that follow, and it covers more ground than most people expect. Knowing the shape of it in advance makes it considerably less daunting.
What to bring
Your original Emirates ID and your insurance card. If you have any previous medical records relevant to pregnancy — earlier pregnancies, gynaecological history, ongoing conditions — bring those too.
Bring a list of anything you take regularly, including supplements and over-the-counter medication. Some things that are entirely fine ordinarily need reviewing in pregnancy, and it is easier to do that from a list than from memory.
It is also worth noting the first day of your last menstrual period before you arrive, since dating starts from there. If your cycles are irregular or you are unsure, say so — it is common, and it is what the ultrasound is for.
The history
This appointment involves a fuller history than a routine consultation. Expect questions about your general health, previous pregnancies and their outcomes, gynaecological history, family history on both sides, any medication, and lifestyle factors.
Some of these questions are personal. They are asked because the answers genuinely change how a pregnancy is monitored, not out of curiosity, and the consultation takes place in a private room. If something is difficult to raise in front of whoever came with you, you are entitled to ask for a moment alone with your doctor.
Examination and investigations
Baseline observations are usually taken — blood pressure, weight, and a general assessment. Your doctor will explain which blood tests are recommended and why, and what each one is looking for.
An ultrasound may be performed to confirm the pregnancy, check the location, and establish dating. Ultrasound is available in the building at MED7 Al Shifa Al Khaleeji, so this does not usually require a separate appointment elsewhere — though whether it happens on the same visit depends on your assessment and the schedule that day.
The plan
By the end of the appointment you should have a schedule: when your next visit is, what will happen at it, and roughly how the appointments are spaced across the pregnancy. You should also know what symptoms warrant contacting the clinic before the next scheduled visit rather than waiting.
Ask about anything you are unsure of — work, travel, exercise, diet, medication you were taking before. These are ordinary questions and there is no reason to save them for later.
Insurance, in advance
Maternity coverage varies significantly between policies, more so than most other areas of insurance. It is genuinely worth confirming what your policy covers before the appointments accumulate rather than afterwards.
